When you compare the cost of a UB education to national averages, the value is clear: Our tuition and fees are among the lowest and most competitive in the nation. The Graduate School of Education is committed to providing additional funding opportunities so that when students graduate, they leave with as little debt as possible.

    Assistantships and Fellowships

    All students who submit applications to our PhD level programs in the following areas are considered for available assistantships and fellowships:

    • Counseling Psychology and School Psychology, PhD
    • Curriculum, Instruction and Science of Learning, PhD
    • Educational Administration, PhD
    • Educational Culture, Policy and Society, PhD
    •  Educational Psychology and Quantitative Methods, PhD
    • Higher Education, PhD
    • Language Education and Multilingualism, PhD

    Assistantships

    Graduate assistant positions in the Graduate School of Education are offered annually to academically admissible students in PhD programs. All students who apply to the select programs listed above are considered for these positions.

    2023-2024 Available Graduate Assistantships for PhD Students


    The Graduate School of Education will offer 25 graduate assistantships for the 2023-24 academic year. A tuition scholarship for 9 credits at the standard graduate tuition rate and applicable fees are included.

    There are two funding levels:

    1. Fourteen assistantships available at $23,000 each
    2. Eleven assistantships available at $38,000 each

    Priority will be given to minoritized students and students interested in studying issues of equity, diversity, justice, and inclusion.

    Funded PhD students are provided the following opportunities:

    • Assisting faculty with their research projects, offering students hands-on, real-time research experience
    • Opportunities to teach
    • Service and work in the community

    Students who receive a graduate assistantship are awarded the following:

    • A tuition scholarship for 9 credits at the standard graduate tuition rate
    • A 10-month stipend of $22,000*
    • Enrollment in the Student Employee Health Insurance Plan

    *Stipends may vary annually.

    Eligible students will have their student accounts credited for the following Broad-Based fees:

    • Comprehensive Fee
    • Academic Excellence and Success fee (ACES)
    • Student Activity Fee
    • International Student Fee (matriculated international students only). 

    These positions, when awarded, are guaranteed for 4 years.

    Fellowships

    Presidential and Schomburg fellowships, listed below, are “top off” funds and are awarded in addition to any GA/RA/TA that is awarded.
