Certification Requirements for Certificate Extensions

Dignity for All Students Workshop Completion

If you obtained an initial certificate prior to Dec. 30, 2014, you must submit verification that the mandated Dignity for All Students workshop was completed. Questions about this requirement should be sent to ubedprep@buffalo.edu.

Gifted Education

Upon successful completion of the gifted education program, you are eligible to be considered for a UB recommendation for the initial or professional certificate, depending on your current level of certification. If you currently hold an initial certificate, you should apply for the initial extension annotation recommendation through UB. If students currently hold a professional certificate, you should apply for the professional extension annotation recommendation through UB.

In addition to a program recommendation, you must:

  1. Pass the Content Specialty Test (CST) for Gifted Education
  2. Apply for an initial or professional extension through the New York State Department of Education (NYSED) Approved Teacher Preparation Program pathway.

Literacy Specialist

Upon successful completion of the literacy specialist program, you are eligible to be considered for a UB recommendation for four certificate areas: birth to grade 6 (initial and professional) and grades 5 through 12 (initial and professional).

In addition to a program recommendation, students must:

  1. Pass the Content Specialty Test (CST) for Literacy Specialist
  2. Apply for an initial or professional certificate (Birth to Grade 6, Grades 5-12, or both) through the New York State Department of Education (NYSED) Approved Teacher Preparation Program Additional Certificate pathway.
