GSE has launched a fully online school building leadership (SBL) and school district leadership (SDL) advanced certificate program, expanding access for aspiring school leaders across New York State.
Building on more than 30 years of impact through GSE’s Leadership Initiative for Tomorrow’s Schools (LIFTS) program, this new fully online format makes it possible for educators to earn their certification while continuing to work full-time, and still benefit from the cohort-based, relationship-driven model that has long defined GSE’s leadership preparation programs.
“We have seen the great benefits that the shift to being fully online has brought to the LIFTS program. Not only is the program now able to reach educators across New York State—expanding its footprint beyond just Buffalo—but students continue to benefit from the cohort model and dedicated faculty to support them that have been hallmarks of the program for the past three decades,” said Margaret Sallee, professor and chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy.
The program’s curriculum is designed to prepare graduates to become certified principals, superintendents and district leaders. Students gain expertise in leadership theory, instructional strategies, management, community engagement and ethical decision-making, and complete 600 hours of clinical internships in real-world school and district settings.
“Seeing the program shift to an online format has been a huge help in talking with current teachers and student support professionals in schools,” said Ryan Taughrin, GSE assistant dean for enrollment management. “We know how busy folks are, and being able to offer that flexibility, while still discussing the program’s incredible curriculum and focus on leadership development, has enhanced our ability to recruit students to the program. Our team in admissions is excited to spread the word about the program across New York State this year.”
Applications are now open for summer 2026 admission. All accepted students will receive a scholarship covering the tuition for one course per year of the program at the in-state rate.
