Research

We’re more than education scholars. We’re also change agents, improving opportunities for individuals and communities. Research conducted at GSE helps us meet that mission, every day.

Advancing Education: Bridging Innovation and Equity

Research is an integral component of our work, where the practices you’ll learn are shaped by discovery in the field. Our faculty and students conduct cutting-edge research in on-campus labs, rural communities and urban districts. Ultimately, their work helps teachers, administrators, information service professionals, policymakers and mental health practitioners do their jobs better—which benefits society locally, nationally and internationally.

From First Semester to the Global Stage

What can happen when experience meets opportunity? Just weeks into her first semester as a PhD student at the University at Buffalo Graduate School of Education, Anna Stukes took the stage in Kazakhstan to deliver two keynote addresses at an international educators conference. Discover how GSE is helping her connect professional expertise, doctoral study and emerging research interests to make an impact—at home and around the world.

Student Research Success

For Russel Bassarath, the chance to travel to Cyprus on a Fulbright Scholarship was more than a chance to see the world. It was also a chance to make a difference in his new community—and bring home lessons that will make him a better teacher wherever his career takes him next. “I want to immerse myself as much as possible in the local communities that I’ll be part of,” said Bassarath, a student in the UB Teach program. “I’m not just going to be passive when I’m there for the nine months.”

Faculty Research in Action

“Students of color are bringing assets with them, even when they are historically underserved,” says Paris Wicker, an assistant professor of educational leadership and policy at UB. Her award-winning research examines how social support networks shape the success and well-being of Black and Indigenous college students. “It is vital that institutions interconnect those familial assets students are bringing with campus resources. That takes quite a bit of work, but we hope this research supports that intentional interconnection is vital to keeping Black women in STEM fields.”

An Environment Ripe for Research Innovation
