Whether you’re just starting your research or are ready to apply, we’ve compiled answers to the most common questions prospective students like you have. Explore the topics below to find the information you need.
All materials in your application must be received by the listed deadline. The Office of Graduate Admission will notify you of its decision after considering your completed application.
Application review is test-blind—we do not look at test scores even if you send them.
Admission criteria for each of our programs varies. Our admission process is holistic and considers multiple factors to determine admission; prior academic performance is just one thing we consider. We are happy to discuss the application and admission process with you in more detail. Request information about a program or contact us.
Undergraduate major requirements vary depending on the program. For those programs that have specific requirements, lists of acceptable majors are provided.
Before beginning any UB graduate program, you must provide evidence of a completed undergraduate bachelor’s degree. For specific requirements, please consult the individual program page.
The GSE application does not include any questions about felony convictions and does not require students to disclose that history during the admission process. However, students participating in clinical or field experience, internships or study abroad programs must declare any felony conviction before matriculating.
Please note: A felony conviction may impede your ability to complete the requirements of your program, as well as meet certain licensure requirements. If you tell us about a felony in your past, a campus committee will review this information and may seek more details from you. The committee will work with your department to overcome possible challenges in securing a field placement, depending on the nature of the charges. If you are unable to successfully complete field education requirements, it will result in dismissal from the program.
Some programs require an interview. We will contact you for an interview after your complete application has been received. (We may contact you via email. Please check the email address listed on your application.)
Credits transfer on a case-by-case basis. You’ll work with your faculty advisor after acceptance to the GSE.

It depends on the program. Check the application requirements for your specific program to learn if letters are required, how many are needed and who should write them.
All letters of recommendation must be submitted electronically by the recommender.
You will provide contact information for each individual writing a recommendation on your application. Once your application is complete, we will contact each of those people by email with a request to provide a recommendation.
The $50 application fee must be paid electronically through UB’s application system. After submitting your application, you will get a unique link to pay.
Deadlines vary by program. Check the application requirements for your specific program.
Your statement may include a detailed explanation of your career objectives and a description of how you expect the program to achieve those. Most programs provide a specific prompt, which you should address in your statement.
While some programs will make a decision within 6-8 weeks of your application, others will wait until the submission deadline has passed before reviewing applications. Your application will not be considered for review until it has been submitted to the Office of Graduate Admission along with all supporting materials, including transcripts, test scores and letters of recommendation.
