Opening Doors Through Research

Sara Kieffer’s journey to higher education began with her diagnosis of ADHD at age 30, which helped her make sense of her past academic struggles. Driven by a newfound understanding, she pursued sociology and social science at Long Beach City College before transferring to UCLA to study gender studies and education. Now a higher education doctoral student, Kieffer’s research focuses on gender studies, disability, and adult learners, especially women in community colleges. Her work is inspired by her personal experiences as a neurodivergent learner and aims to make higher education more inclusive and accessible. Kieffer also volunteers to teach college-readiness courses to system-impacted students, supporting those often marginalized by traditional education systems. She is passionate about reshaping higher education to support adult learners and challenge misconceptions about neurodivergent individuals’ potential.
