For those men and women who have served our country, we are eager to serve you in obtaining a degree. Thanks to the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, higher education has become more accessible for service members. We also understand the balance required to transition from the military life to an academic one. The University at Buffalo and the Graduate School of Education are dedicated to providing the services required to make this transition an easy one.
Get the support you need and the benefits you deserve. We’re here to help student veterans (and their dependents) make the transition to college and be successful at UB. Whether you need help with your benefits paperwork, a connection to local and national groups that support veterans, or just someone to talk to, we’re here for you.

Use the GI Bill comparison tool to assist you in determining your eligibility. You can apply for GI Bill benefits by completing the veterans on line application and submitting it to the Veterans Administration.
Please note that the VA does not cover your tuition deposit. However, you will get your deposit refunded at a later date. This process usually takes place during the refund period, and will handled on a case-by-case basis with coordination between UB’s financial aid and student accounts offices.
After you are accepted, we must certify your enrollment in order for you to receive your benefits.
You must be certified by the certifying official at UB in order to receive your benefits.
The VA provides information about benefit rates.
(Your BAH rates change based on what benefit you use. For BAH rates, insert rank as E-5 and zip code as 14214. Your current BAH rate will be the dependent rate.)
For new applicants, it can take up to 12 weeks before the first payment is made. However, once approved for benefits, you will receive retroactive pay.
Beginning with terms starting on or after December 17, 2021, if you are using your Post-9/11 GI BillĀ® benefit at an Institution of Higher Learning (IHL) facility, you are required to verify your enrollment at the end of each month to receive your Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA). We want to help you meet this new requirement so you can continue your education without any interruption in benefits.
The VA encourages students to opt into text messaging, which is a simple, quick option for verifying monthly enrollment and ensuring you receive your MHA payments uninterrupted. If you opt out of text message verification or do not respond to the opt-in text, you will be automatically enrolled in email verification with the email address on file with VA.
For more information, refer to the VA enrollment verification webpage.
If you are collecting VA benefits, you can have your monthly check sent directly to your checking account by enrolling in direct deposit. You can also enroll in direct deposit by calling 1-877-838-2778 or TDD 1-800-829-4833.

You must notify Veteran Services if you are notified by the VA about a change in your benefits, if you exhaust your benefits, or if you receive a debt letter from the VA.
Some of these changes may affect the amount of benefits you receive. Please note that the law prohibits payment of VA benefits for a course if you withdraw or resign from it, or for a course you completed if you received a grade that will not be used in computing requirements for graduation. UB is required to promptly report any change in enrollment, or receipt of a non-punitive grade, that affects the receipt of VA educational benefits.
If you are involuntarily activated, please contact the Veteran Services office for our official policy.
