If you are currently unable to take the IELTS, PTE or TOEFL tests because they are canceled due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the University at Buffalo will accept the Duolingo English Test (DET) for proof of English proficiency. This test can be taken online, in your own home. More information can be found on the Graduate School’s website.
The TOEFL iBT® Special Home Edition is a safe and convenient option for students who are unable to take the TOEFL iBT test at a test center due to public health concerns.
International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) supports international students at UB. They are here to help you. They offer provide news and events that may affect you as an international student. Our friendly staff members — including many international students — speak your language and can help address your immigration concerns, help you prepare for your trip to Buffalo and can even answer questions about paying for your education. The Center is an interdisciplinary research center that brings together scholars and students who use the methods of the social sciences and the humanities to study educational issues that have a global dimensions.
We locate the study of education in a broad-based social, cultural and linguistic context to understand the global issues that affect educational practices and outcomes in schools, communities, and educational systems on the local and global levels.

The English Language Institute (ELI), founded in 1971 and a unit of the Graduate School of Education of the University at Buffalo (UB), the State University of New York (SUNY), offers English language instruction, cultural orientation and pre-academic training to international students, scholars and professionals on an intensive and per-course basis.
ELI conducts the Intensive English Program (IEP), which specializes in preparing students for university study in the United States; the English as a Second Language Program for undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in academic programs at the university; part-time evening and customized programs for professionals; and overseas programs offering language-learning and teacher-training opportunities both in other countries and in Buffalo.
