Fellowship Honors Late Wife

Tim Laraway and his wife, Nell, were keenly aware of how much a graduate degree in librarianship could accomplish; after all, it led to her 20-year career as a law librarian. So, when she passed away in 2021, Tim sought to honor her in a way that would preserve her legacy: By establishing a fellowship to help information science students afford a UB education.

Building Libraries That Mirror Our Communities

Grant Investigates Ways to Improve Diversity Among Librarians

In 2020, more than 83 percent of all librarians identified as white. Associate professors Amy Van Scoy and Sunha Kim, come together in this study and ask: how can libraries improve retention of underrepresented librarians?

VanScoy and Kim used a $478,000 grant awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to understand when and why librarians of color leave the profession. From work exploring issues of equity and inclusion to seeking deeper insights into the ways humans make sense of information, GSE faculty play a leading role in ensuring knowledge remains accessible and understandable.

Faculty Expertise

Heidi Julien, a professor of information science, is well suited to teach students about digital literacy and information behavior/information practices; in the past, she has also taught classes on marketing, as well as research methods and management.

In addition to serving on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including the Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science and Open Information Science, Julien is currently completing an Insight Development Grant awarded by the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada, “Precarity and Information Marginalization: Exploring How Academic Casualization Complicates Workplace Information Practices.”
