Are you looking to take a class or two but not ready to enroll full-time in a degree program? Non-degree courses are a great way for you to earn credit and experience in the classroom. Non-degree study is possible within our four departments and many of the courses are available online.
PLEASE NOTE: Students who hold a bachelor's degree are permitted to register for graduate coursework as non-degree students for a maximum of 12 credit hours. No more than 12 credits earned as a non-degree seeking student will be eligible for future use in a graduate degree program.
Non-Degree Application Deadlines
Winter Session: Dec. 15
Spring Semester: Jan. 14
Summer Session: May 20, then rolling until July 19 based on session and course availability
Fall Semester: Aug. 20
Course listing PDFs are prepared for students who have never been formally accepted to a program within the Graduate School of Education.
In addition to the online application and $35.00 non-refundable fee, proof of a bachelor’s degree is required. You are required to obtain approval of the instructor of the desired class. You may take up to 12 credits as a non-matriculated student.
As a non-matriculating student, you are allowed to enroll (with instructor permission) in the courses on the course listing PDF.
Application fees are NON-REFUNDABLE. Course offerings are subject to change without notice. Please contact the department before registering for a course to be sure the course is available and will run, to avoid losing application fees. Our departments reserve the right to drop a non-matriculated student registered for a course if the spot is needed for a matriculated student in a program. You may choose to seek non-matriculated enrollment in a different course if availability exists.
You will use the graduate form to register for courses numbered 500 and higher.
1. Complete an online application for non-degree status: You will need to attach a copy of your bachelor's degree transcript. A non-refundable $35 application fee can be paid electronically when you submit your online application.
Additionally, if you would like to take courses as a non-degree student in the Department of Information Science and have below a 3.0 GPA, you will be asked to submit an educational objectives statement that addresses your ability to succeed in graduate-level coursework.
PLEASE NOTE: Approval for non-degree student status does not grant permission for specific courses nor does it guarantee that any particular course will be available in a given semester. If you only are interested in taking a specific course, you should speak with the academic department and/or course instructor prior to applying.
2. Wait for review: Once your online application, application fee, and transcripts have been received, your application requesting non-degree status will be reviewed.
3. Enroll: If you are granted non-matriculated status, you will then either (a) enroll in classes through the HUB Student Center if prior approval was granted or (b) be directed to your academic department for course selection and approval.
4. Verify NYS Residency, if applicable: In order to be eligible for in-state resident tuition, you must be currently living in the state for one year or more and submit the required documents through your student application portal. You will be deemed an out-of-state resident for tuition purposes until supporting documentation is provided to verify New York State residency.
