Creating Pathways

Several Brooklyn Public Library scholars celebrated the completion of GSE’s information and library science master’s program. These students were part of the Brooklyn Public Library’s Pathways to Leadership program. This scholarship program was designed for BPL staff members working in non-librarian roles who aspire to become librarians and leaders in the field.

Forging a Library Legacy

Professor uses Fulbright to launch library program in Ghana

Amy VanScoy, an associate professor of information science, will develop a library and information science program at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana as part of a Fulbright Scholar award she received. There’s only one other program like it in the entire country, meaning Ghana faces a chronic shortage of librarians.

Faculty in GSE’s Department of Information Science research how to make the world’s information more accessible. From studying human computer interaction, and investigating areas of equity, diversity and global issues, UB is an international leader in bringing knowledge to life.

Faculty Expertise

For many high school students, the college admissions process seems an inscrutable—and insurmountable—hurdle. Africa S. Hands, an assistant professor of information science, is looking to knock that barrier down. Using the knowledge she gained through work in admissions and academic advising, Hands looks for ways that libraries can demystify the admission and college-going experience for both undergraduate and graduate students.

“I see the public library as an information institution, an educational institution, that can be in that space of informing people about their options—being sites for college classes, being sites for college fairs and programming related to financial aid,” she says.
