  • UB doctoral student uses social media apps to improve classroom learning

    Denise Grandits, a current doctoral student from the Department of Learning and Instruction, has earned national recognition for her work implementing new media and literacies into her seventh- and eighth-grade literature class at St. Amelia School in Buffalo. Grandits was aware that students were using social media to read and write, so she applied social media platforms in her classroom and worked with one platform each week, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.

    Amherst Central High School and GSE teamed up for what may be the first-ever celebration in a Western New York school of International Women’s Day on March 9, 2019, featuring school-wide events and “learn-in/tech-in” sessions to raise awareness of women’s issues among students.

    Sarah A. Robert, associate professor from the Department of Learning and Instruction, is examining how addressing the double burden of malnutrition is impacting the workload of teachers in Dominican Republic classrooms. “Feeding students at school may address the double burden of malnutrition and, more often than not, create a double burden of teaching work,” said Robert.
