Why Speech and Hearing Science, and Early Childhood/Childhood Education at UB?

In this combined program, students study in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences as well as the Department of Learning and Instruction in the Graduate School of Education. While in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences, you benefit from a dedicated focus on the core of knowledge regarding normal processes of speech, language and hearing; in the Department of Learning and Instruction, you will learn how to bring classroom lessons to life for children from birth to grade 6.

UB prepares highly qualified teachers who lead their classrooms, shape students’ lives and positively engage with the communities they serve.

Students enrolled in this program will:

  • Demonstrate knowledge across the age span of basic human communication processes related to their biological, neurological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, linguistic, and cultural bases.
  • Recognize and describe normal aspects of the development and use of phonology, receptive and expressive language, fluency, social communication and hearing.
  • Complete intensive clinical education experiences in collaboration with Western New York schools across diverse settings, while learning the nuances of the teaching profession.
  • Gain the skills, expertise and confidence to implement evidence-based practice in the classroom and co-teach alongside an expert teacher in a one-year residency.
