Leadership pilot takes off

After its launch last year as a GSE pilot project, the Buffalo Aspiring Leadership Academy, or BALA, continues this year with nine candidates working with principal-mentors in nine Buffalo Public Schools. Design elements are similar to the Teacher Residency Program: Members of this year’s class work in schools and do GSE coursework that completes the requirements of the New York State School Building Certificate, a qualification for any school leadership position in the state.
UB receives $293,000 to support neurodiverse students in computer science

A $293,000 grant from the National Science Foundation will help a UB team of investigators lead an effort to create more inclusive college classrooms that recognize the neurodiversity of students by building micro-credential training courses for computer science faculty.
Game on: GSE professor develops a pre-K assessment tool into a game kids navigate

To help teachers determine if their pre-kindergarten students are ready for more formal schooling, a UB-led team of researchers will classroom-test a game-like tool that children play as it gauges their ability to pay attention, remember rules and control impulses.

Children who eat slower are less likely to be extroverted and impulsive, according to a new study co-led by the University at Buffalo and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and co-authored by a GSE professor and doctoral candidate.
