Ongoing professional development support for teachers

Professional learning communities around digital literacies in rural schools

David Bruce, associate professor from the Department of Learning and Instruction, is continuing to partner with Cattaraugus–Allegany (CA) BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services) and Houghton College to provide technology training and curricular integration with teachers in the 22 CA BOCES school districts, a partnership that began in 2015. The collaboration is part of the UB Graduate School of Education Faculty in Residence Program.

“Our partnership with CA BOCES has provided high quality and sustained professional development around digital literacies for participating teachers,” said Bruce. “Specifically, we have provided exemplar classroom instruction and uses of 21st century literacies, especially applications of tablet-based digital video computing.” The partnership has also been working to cultivate and sustain professional learning communities to provide ongoing teacher support.

The ongoing professional development allows teacher participants to develop their own digital literacies competencies, integrate 21st century literacies into their curriculum and share their teacher and student work within their learning community. “We’re providing opportunities for teachers to become leaders in their department, buildings and across CA BOCES,” said Bruce.

The Faculty in Residence Program is an initiative designed to engage GSE faculty and local community-based educational institutions in site-based, mutually beneficial research-based projects. Projects must demonstrate clear benefits to the community and may include a wide-range of researchable topics.
