After 27 years of experience as a substance abuse counselor, certified rehabilitation counselor and national credentialed counselor, Davina Moss-King (PhD ’05, Counselor Education) became the founder and president of Positive Direction and Associates in 2014. Moss-Kings’ company focuses on enhancing the quality of life for women and infants that are exposed to opioids and other substances to ensure a successful pregnancy, as well as delivery. She notes that each woman’s quality of life is improved by education, which increases self-efficacy for parenting and recovery.

A $3.3 million grant from the Institute of Education Sciences was awarded to Gregory Fabiano, professor from the Department of Counseling, School and Educational Psychology to connect the educational goals of ADHD children’s special education programs with their daily work supervised by their classroom teachers. Fabiano will work with Jihnhee Yu, associate director of the UB Population Health Observatory, and William E. Pelham Jr. and Nicole Schatz of Florida International University.

Bridget Hier, assistant professor from the Department of Counseling, School and Educational Psychology, is partnering with elementary schools in two Western New York districts to develop effective writing instruction and intervention practices for elementary-aged students. The collaboration is part of the UB Graduate School of Education Faculty in Residence Program.

University at Buffalo Graduate School of Education alumna Pauline Skowron Schmidt, EdM ’99, PhD ’09, received the Divergent Publication Award for Excellence in Literacy in a Digital Age Research from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) in recognition of her book, “Reimagining Literacies in the Digital Age: Multimodal Strategies to Teach with Technology.”
