Mission

The Department of Information Science is dedicated to scholarship, innovation and leadership in the information discipline. Through a combination of research, experiential learning and community engagement, we are committed to equipping students with the critical skills, domain expertise and ethical foundations necessary to thrive in the rapidly changing field of information and library science.

Departmental Goals

  1. Foster Student-Centered Learning and Success:
    Develop comprehensive, accessible and high-quality educational experiences that support diverse learners, address individual academic needs and prepare graduates to lead in a dynamic socio-technical landscape.
  2. Lead Impactful Research and Knowledge Sharing:
    Conduct and share scholarship that addresses important disciplinary and societal issues, and promote interdisciplinary and international collaborations.
  3. Cultivate a Collaborative and Supportive Department Culture:
    Strengthen departmental relationships and professional development by promoting positive dynamics, mentoring and inclusive engagement among students, faculty and staff.

Goals of MS Programs

  1. Graduates demonstrate a theoretical and conceptual understanding of information science, including the representation, organization, retrieval, dissemination, use and curation of information.
  2. Graduates are prepared to apply disciplinary knowledge and skills in a variety of information contexts.
  3. Graduates demonstrate professional competences, including leadership, critical and analytical thinking, research, communication, collaboration, cultural competence, reflective practice, and adherence to professional ethics.
  4. Graduates demonstrate values, attitudes and behaviors that are essential for information and library professionals, including a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
