Prepare for a role as an elementary or secondary literacy coach through academic coursework and a specialized practicum in this accessible program, open to both current UB students and non-UB students. By completing four courses, you’ll develop foundational knowledge in literacy, diversity and equity, gaining the skills to design, implement and evaluate literacy curriculum and instruction. Additionally, you’ll learn to assess and evaluate literacy while supporting classroom teachers through professional learning, leadership and coaching.

Speak with your academic advisor about this micro-credential. After completing the application form, the program director or a member of the GSE admissions team will follow up with you about your micro-credential application.
You must apply and be approved to take non-degree coursework using the GSE Non-Degree application. The application contains specific questions related to your teaching experience and certifications. Unofficial copies of your transcripts and proof of certification are required to apply. Upon acceptance, you will need to show proof of New York State residency.
Complete the online application form: Once you have activated your application account: select the term you are applying for; choose “Non-Degree Study” in the “Area of Interest” dropdown field; then choose “LAI – Non-Degree Student” in the “Degree Program” dropdown field.
The Center for Literacy and Reading Instruction (CLaRI) at the University at Buffalo has been a trusted resource for literacy services in Western New York since 1963, helping thousands of children in grades 1–12 improve their reading and writing skills. At CLaRI, we provide individualized, research-based literacy assessment and instruction tailored to each child’s unique needs, from those slightly below grade level to those facing significant challenges. Our hands-on tutoring sessions include real literature, spelling, vocabulary and engaging activities designed to foster growth in reading and writing. In just one 12-week session, children often show significant progress, making CLaRI a cornerstone for literacy development and research in the community.
