Any proposed use of generative AI in doctoral research and writing must be disclosed in advance and explicitly approved by the student’s advisor and dissertation committee.
If generative AI is approved and used, students must:
- Document and disclose the nature, purpose and extent of use in accordance with guidelines established by their advisor and/or dissertation committee, as appropriate to the stage and form of scholarly work (e.g., qualifying exams, proposals, dissertations, publications)
- Be able to clearly explain and justify how the tool was used, including relevant prompts, processes and decision rationale, when appropriate
- Critically evaluate and verify all outputs, ensuring accuracy, originality and proper attribution where applicable
