Dr. David Cantaffa.

Dr. David Cantaffa serves as Associate Provost for Academic Affairs at the State University of New York, where he leads systemwide efforts to support the development and registration of academic programs across all 64 campuses. In this role, he also contributes to the development and implementation of academic policies spanning general education, prior learning assessment, and transfer.

Before assuming this position, Dr. Cantaffa focused on educator preparation programs and related policy initiatives within SUNY. His career also includes leadership roles at the University at Buffalo Graduate School of Education, where he served as Assistant Dean for Teacher Education and Director of the Teacher Education Institute. In addition, he has taught education courses as an adjunct instructor. He began his career in education as a high school biology teacher, grounding his work in classroom practice.

Dr. Cantaffa earned his doctorate in Social Foundations of Education, along with a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Policy and a master’s degree in Biochemistry, from the University at Buffalo. He also completed a post-baccalaureate initial teacher education program. He received his undergraduate degree in biology and philosophy from Muhlenberg College.

A thoughtful and engaged leader, Dr. Cantaffa is recognized for bridging the gap between policy and practice, ensuring that system-level decisions remain connected to the lived experiences of learners and educators. He regularly collaborates with a wide range of stakeholders—including teacher candidates and their families, school and district leaders, policymakers, and administrators across SUNY and the New York State Education Department—to advance initiatives that strengthen educational systems while promoting equity and excellence.
