Financial Aid

Making education accessible isn't a one-size-fits-all approach. Every student's path is unique, and so are their financial needs.

That's why the Graduate School of Education (GSE) offers multiple options to help fund your education. Many GSE students combine sources like assistantships that cover full tuition, scholarships, on-campus jobs, and grant-funded research opportunities. You can even pursue your degree part-time, allowing you to pay for classes as you go. Whatever your situation, UB is committed to making your education within reach.

Available Aid Options

Financial aid (e.g., loans) administered through the State of New York and the federal government, for students with financial need, is only available to domestic students.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Domestic applicants can apply for financial aid by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. The basic information you provide on this online-only form will determine your eligibility for all the financial aid programs sponsored by the federal government.

Federal TEACH Grant

You can receive up to $4,000 per year from a Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) grant by agreeing to meet certain service requirements after graduation. To qualify, you must teach in a high-need field as defined by the U.S. Department of Education, not by UB. Changes to this list are beyond UB's control. Additionally, you must teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school, or in an educational service agency, that serves students from low-income families. The service requirement involves teaching for at least four full academic years within eight years of completing (or ceasing enrollment in) the program for which you received the grant.

New York State Aid

New York State residents can also qualify for programs offered to graduate students who demonstrate financial need, such as the Graduate Opportunity Program and Veterans Tuition Award.

You must complete a New York State TAP application, as well as an application for each program, for consideration.

Loans

While grants and scholarships don’t need to be repaid, loans do. UB’s Office of Financial Aid can help you understand the wide variety of public and private loans that are available to help you finance your education. If you demonstrate financial need, you may qualify for a low-interest federal loan; other loans are available regardless of need.

Graduate Assistantships

GSE will offer 25 graduate assistantships for the 2023-24 academic year for academically admissible students in select PhD programs. Awards include a tuition scholarship for 9 credits, fees and a stipend.

Scholarships

Enrolled students have access to UB’s Scholarship Portal, which is a smart shortcut to apply for campus philanthropic scholarships. Gain access to more than 30 scholarships just for GSE students.

Campus and Part-Time Jobs

GSE students who are eligible to work on campus may be able to find jobs as  student assistants or graduate/research/teaching assistants. If you’re a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is eligible for financial aid, you may also be able to participate in a Federal Work-Study job.
