Counseling, School and Educational Psychology

Our advanced graduate certificate in mental health counseling focuses on providing you with the necessary skills to transform the lives of your clients and advance your career goals. If you hold a master’s degree in counseling, our program will result in your eligibility to take the New York State licensing exam in mental health counseling.

Our rehabilitation counseling advanced certificate program is for you if you hold a master's degree in counseling or a Category R field (see Program Coursework below) and you want to help veterans or people with disabilities return to work or live independently. You will learn how to build your counseling skills and work with clients to overcome or manage the personal, social, and professional effects of disabilities on achieving their goals. Our program provides you with the educational requirements to be eligible for the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) credential while complying with all Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) requirements.

Our master's program in rehabilitation counseling focuses on preparing you to become a competent and skillful rehabilitation counselor. Our program is fully accredited by the New York State Education Department and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), and may lead to you becoming a nationally-certified rehabilitation counselor. As a rehabilitation counselor, you will provide psychological, social and vocational rehabilitation services to people with physical, mental/psychiatric, cognitive or sensory disabilities at various stages in their lives.

Our counseling minor, open to all UB undergraduate students regardless of your major, is designed to be a pre-professional sequence of courses in the counseling field. This minor will prepare you for entry level positions in social service agencies or prepare you for graduate studies in counseling, psychology, social work or a related helping profession. This program does not lead to licensure to practice counseling.

Educational Leadership and Policy

Our expedited advanced certificate in school district business leader (E-SDBL) is intended for those leaders who already have School Building Leader or School District Leader certification and now want to become certified as a School District Business Leader. The program, which is 100% online, consists of five courses and a supervised internship in a school business office. Courses are offered one at a time, over five semesters. The supervised internship can be undertaken as an Independent Study upon completion of three of the five courses. Admission to the program is on a continuing basis, meaning you can apply at most any time and begin classes the next semester.

This minor offers coursework that will prepare undergraduate students for entry-level positions in educational leadership, policy, non-profits and a variety of other organizations. The education leadership and policy for equity minor will help students develop a focused understanding of sociopolitical, cultural and economic issues that affect equity in schools, colleges and communities in today’s globalized society.

Our doctoral program in curriculum, instruction and the science of learning is a multidisciplinary program that focuses on addressing practical educational problems through research in diverse contexts for learning and teaching. You can create your own customized program to meet your research and career interests in one of these five concentrations — elementary education, English education, mathematics education, reading education and science education –or in the general track that allows for an innovative interdisciplinary focus.

Our master's program in education and technology is for you if (1) you are in a school seeking to improve your technological and teaching knowledge, or (2) you have technology experience and wish to explore its application in educational contexts. Our program provides you with an understanding of how technology is applicable to the learning process, although the program does not lead to New York State classroom teaching certification.

Our advanced certificate program in educational technology and new literacies is for you if you are interested in using the latest technology tools and teaching practices to meet the challenges of 21st century learning environments. The use of technology tools has created a framework called new literacies, which establishes social practices that enable learning concepts to be consumed in new ways.
