Advanced Certificates (AC)

Advanced certificates are short, focused programs at the graduate level designed to give students advanced skills in a particular subject or area of specialization. A range of advanced certificate programs are offered both on campus and online. These certificates can be taken concurrently with another program at UB, or as a stand-alone.


Counseling, School and Educational Psychology

Our advanced certificate in applied statistical analysis focuses on providing a solid foundation from which you may pursue either doctoral studies or a career as a researcher whose job entails analyzing statistical data (especially as related to education). This certificate enhances your employability, and any student holding or pursuing a master's or doctoral degree from any discipline may complete this certificate.
Our advanced graduate certificate in mental health counseling focuses on providing you with the necessary skills to transform the lives of your clients and advance your career goals. If you hold a master’s degree in counseling, our program will result in your eligibility to take the New York State licensing exam in mental health counseling. 
This program meets your need for continuing education in the area of mindfulness counseling for wellness and engagement if you are in the helping profession and are a professional psychologist, social worker, mental health counselor, school psychologist, school counselor, administrator, lawyer, teacher, occupational therapist, physical therapist, speech-language pathologist, audiologist or doctor. 
Our rehabilitation counseling advanced certificate program is for you if you hold a master's degree in counseling or a Category R field (see Program Coursework below) and you want to help veterans or people with disabilities return to work or live independently. You will learn how to build your counseling skills and work with clients to overcome or manage the personal, social, and professional effects of disabilities on achieving their goals. Our program provides you with the educational requirements to be eligible for the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) credential while complying with all Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) requirements.
Our advanced certificate in school counseling focuses on training school counselors to assist students in grades K-12 in academic, career and personal/social development. Our program is for you if you have a master's degree in school counseling and are seeking permanent certification as a school counselor in New York State. Upon completion of this program, you will be able to work as a school counselor in New York State.

Educational Leadership and Policy

Our expedited advanced certificate in school district business leader (E-SDBL) is intended for those leaders who already have School Building Leader or School District Leader certification and now want to become certified as a School District Business Leader. The program, which is 100% online, consists of five courses and a supervised internship in a school business office. Courses are offered one at a time, over five semesters. The supervised internship can be undertaken as an Independent Study upon completion of three of the five courses. Admission to the program is on a continuing basis, meaning you can apply at most any time and begin classes the next semester.
This certificate is designed to provide students with advanced preparation in data collection and analysis as related to key educational issues nationally and cross-nationally. This certificate is also designed to respond to the growing demand for national and international training in mixed methods research.
If you are a UB doctoral student (UB master's students may seek permission to enroll) looking for advanced training in qualitative methods or looking to apply research skills to address specific institutional problems, this advanced certificate is for you. Our advanced certificate in qualitative methodology provides you with an advanced specialization in qualitative methodology within the social and human sciences — responding to the increased demand for research informed by qualitative methods across multiple institutional and organizational settings.
Our advanced certificate in school business and human resource administration (SBHRA) is for you if you are an assistant principal, principal or district-level administrator seeking to expand your knowledge and understanding of school business and human resource administration. This program will provide you with skills that you can apply to your present position or in preparation for a possible promotion.

Learning and Instruction

Our advanced certificate program in college teaching is for you if you teach or plan to teach within post-secondary education and you would like to enhance your skills and employability. This program prepares you—with your pre-existing content discipline expertise—to use the elements of effective college teaching, assessment, technology integration and 21st century learning tools.
Our advanced certificate program in educational technology and new literacies is for you if you are interested in using the latest technology tools and teaching practices to meet the challenges of 21st century learning environments. The use of technology tools has created a framework called new literacies, which establishes social practices that enable learning concepts to be consumed in new ways.
Our advanced certificate program in gifted education is for you if you are interested in developing the potential and addressing the specific needs of high ability students. Our program is aligned with New York State Education Department requirements and will prepare you to work with gifted students who require educational programs or services that will help them realize their full potential.
Our advanced certificate program in literacy teaching and learning is designed for you if you have already been certified to teach in the areas of early childhood, childhood, adolescence or related educational areas (e.g., teaching English language learners, special education) or if you are an educational professional who desires more experience in the foundations of literacy learning and teaching.
Our advanced certificate program in music learning theory is grounded in theory, research and practice. This certification is designed for you if you are interested in the advanced study of Gordon's Music Learning Theory and its practical applications. Your program peers may include international and national, college and university professionals, as well as P-12 personnel.
Our advanced certificate program in teaching and leading for diversity is for you if you are interested in issues of diversity, multiculturalism and social justice. Our program focuses on the growing demand by educators for the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to address and embrace cultural diversity among students, one of the most important issues for educators in the 21st century.

Library and Information Studies

Our advanced certificate in library and information science is for you if you have completed your master's degree in information and library science and want to upgrade your competencies or wish to change career directions. This program requires the completion of 18 credit hours of interdisciplinary study tailored to your academic needs and goals.
