UB Teach Combined BA/EdM Program

Earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in just 5 years—saving time and money—so you can become a teacher and start changing lives sooner.

Earn Your Bachelor’s and Master’s in Just 5 Years

Save time and money—and become a teacher who changes lives sooner. During your first three years of the program, you’ll study a particular content area in UB’s College of Arts and Sciences. Then, in your last two years, you’ll get the skills to teach what you’ve learned in our Graduate School of Education—an experience that culminates with a one-year teaching residency.

Program Overview

UB Teach graduates are eligible for New York State professional teaching certification in grades 5-12. You’ll graduate in just 5 years, saving time and money—and you won’t have to apply to grad school.

Every student in the UB Teach program participates in a full-year teacher residency, in which you’ll co-teach next to a skilled mentor. You’ll benefit from experiencing the rhythms of a complete school year as you get to know each of your students.

UB is a member in good standing of the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP), a national accrediting organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Subjects

As a student in the UB Teach program, you’ll focus on one of these content areas before learning how to be a teacher.

Getting Out of His Comfort Zone

UB Teach student Russel Bassarath is as drawn by classroom teaching as he is research. At GSE, he doesn’t have to choose: After leaving New York State for the first time to spend a year teaching in a Cyprus school, he earned a Fulbright Scholar Award to carry out more work while abroad. For the naturally curious Bassarath, it’s an opportunity he plans to take full advantage of. “I want to immerse myself as much as possible in the local communities that I’ll be part of,” he says. “I’m not just going to be passive when I’m there for the nine months.”

Building Lasting Skills and Relationships

Many UB Teach alums say our immersive, one-year student teaching experience gave them the skills and confidence to thrive now in their own classrooms. “I have friends that have gone through the six- or eight-week student teaching programs, and they say you’re rushed,” says Jacquelyn Wackowski ‘22. “I wouldn’t have gotten those relationships if I had been only there for eight weeks.”
