Fourth Annual Three-Minute Thesis Competition

Christopher Spence (PhD candidate, ECPS) won third place in the university-wide Fourth Annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition on Friday, March 13, 2020, for the presentation “The Impact of High-Stakes Testing.”

Michelle Wing (PhD candidate, ECPS) presented her paper “The Modern Wonder Woman: Reflections of working-class women on their post-secondary education journey” at the Research on Women and Education organized by the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in Nashville, TN, November 2019.

Hyunmyung Jo (PhD candidate, ECPS) presented his paper "Gap of College Knowledge Utilization Within the Middle-Class Group and the Impact of Economic Capital" at the Annual Conference of Korean-American Educational Researchers Association in Toronto, Canada, April 2019.

Hyunmyung Jo (PhD candidate, ECPS) presented his paper "Re-Considering the Position of Students in the Tripartite Relationship Between Family, School and Student" at the Annual Conference of the Comparative and International Education Society in San Francisco, CA, April 2019.

Yun Liang (PhD student, ECPS) presented her paper “Reproducing the Model Minority Myth: Culture, Family and Social Mobility of Cross-Generational Chinese Immigrants” at the Eastern Sociological Society in Boston, MA, March 2019.  

Ba Zan Lin (PhD student, ECPS) presented his paper, “Leadership and Civic Engagement of Myanmar Refugee Students in the United States: Experiences, Influences and Aspirations,” at the Eighth Asian Conference on Education, organized by the International Academic Forum (IAFOR), October 2016. IAFOR provides new perspectives to the thought-leaders and decision-makers of today and tomorrow by offering constructive environments for dialogue and interchange at the intersections of nation, culture and discipline. The conference was held at the Art Center Kobe, Japan, and included sessions on social justice issues in education, international comparative research, teacher education and meeting the academic needs in global and digital era.

Maureen McCarthy and Carolina Rojas-Pion (PhD candidates, ECPS) presented their paper "Young Adults Opposing Marginalization: Reimaging Civic and Community Engagement" at the Anthropology and Education Conference at Columbia University, NY, October 2018.

Jennifer Serniuk (PhD candidate, ECPS) presented her paper "Through the Mother’s Eyes: Renegotiating Motherhood, Mobility and Educational Possibilities in Karen Refugee Families" at the Anthropology and Education Conference at Columbia University, NY, October 2018.

Kriti Singh (PhD student, ECPS), Seong Won Han (assistant professor, ECPS), Lois Weis (SUNY Distinguished Professor), Chungseo Kang (postdoctoral associate, ECPS) and Rachel Fix Dominguez (PhD candidate, ECPS) presented their co-authored paper "Gender Inequality and STEM Occupational Expectations: The Role of Parents and Self-Motivation in Producing Outcomes" at the Sociologists for Women in Society Conference in Denver, CO, February 2019, and the Eastern Sociological Society Conference in Boston, MA, March 2019.

Kriti Singh (PhD student, ECPS), Seong Won Han (assistant professor, ECPS), Lois Weis (SUNY Distinguished Professor), Chungseo Kang (postdoctoral associate, ECPS) and Rachel Fix Dominguez (PhD candidate, ECPS) received acceptance for their co-authored paper "Restricted by Gender? Parents, Self-Motivation and STEM Occupational Expectations" from Sociologists for Women in Society and Singh presented their paper at the Sociologists for Women in Society Conference in Denver, CO, February 2019.

Christopher Spence (PhD candidate, ECPS) presented his paper "The Impact of Standardized Testing on Teachers’ Expectations of Students’ Behavior and Academic Prowess" at the University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Education’s Ethnography in Education Research Forum in Philadelphia, February 2019.

Yuejia Wang (PhD student, ECPS) presented her paper "Understanding the Relationship Between English Proficiency and Sociocultural Adjustment by Comparing Chinese and Indian International Students" at the Annual Conference of the Comparative and International Educational Society in Mexico City, Mexico, March 2018. This paper was also presented at the University at Buffalo Celebration of Student Academic Excellence, NY, April 2018.

Publications

Chungseo Kang (postdoctoral associate, ECPS) and Darlene Garcia Torres (PhD candidate, ECPS) published their paper “College undermatching, bachelor’s degree attainment and minority students” in the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education.

Katie Reeb-Reascos and Jennifer Serniuk (PhD candidates, ECPS) published their paper “ESSA, Low-Wage Migrants, and the Persistent Neoliberal Education Structure: A Critical Review” in the Texas Education Review.

Darlene Garcia Torres (PhD candidate, ECPS) had her paper "Distributed Leadership, Professional Collaboration and Teachers’ Job Satisfaction in U.S. Schools" accepted for publication in the Journal of Teaching and Teacher Education.

Darlene Garcia Torres (PhD candidate, ECPS) published her paper “Distributed Leadership and Teacher Job Satisfaction in Singapore”  in the Journal of Educational Administration.

Michelle Wing (PhD student, ECPS) published her co-authored paper “Charter Schools: The Destruction of Teacher Certification in New York State” in the Texas Education Review.

Hyunmyung Jo (PhD candidate, ECPS), Chungseo Kang (postdoctoral associate, ECPS), Tami Ryan (PhD candidate, ECPS), Shuyi Zhao (PhD student, ECPS), Richard Dirmyer (PhD student, ECPS) and Kriti Singh (PhD student, ECPS) received the 2019 GSE Dean’s Travel Award for Conference Presentations and Attendance.

Katie Reeb-Reascos (PhD candidate, ECPS) was selected into the inaugural Spencer Foundation/AERA sponsored Pre-Conference Seminar for Early Career Scholars with Disabilities/Disabled Scholars. The seminar was held in conjunction with the 2019 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association in Toronto, Canada. Selection for this competitive seminar is based on the dissertation proposal and potential to contribute to the broad-based education community.

Yuejia Wang (PhD student, ECPS) received the GSE Dean’s Scholarship for the 2017-18 academic year and the University at Buffalo Student Academic Excellence Award for 2018.

Rachel Dominguez (PhD candidate, ECPS), Chungseo Kang (postdoctoral associate, ECPS) and Darlene García Torres (PhD candidate, ECPS) received the 2017 GSE Dean’s Travel Award for Conference Presentations and Attendance.

Hyunmyung Jo (PhD candidate, ECPS) received the 2017 GSE Graduate Student Research Grant for his project “Building a New Pipeline in the Era of Globalization: Transnational Learning Journeys of the Korean Early Studying Abroad Students.”

Hyunmyung Jo (PhD candidate, ECPS) received the D. Bruce Johnston International Student Dissertation Research Travel Fund to work on transnational learning journeys of Korean ‘early studying abroad’ (ESA) students in 2017. His dissertation will address the issues of Korean international students’ secondary to postsecondary pipeline and the transformation of social (re)production based on educational outcomes in the globalized society.

Khanyisile Mbulelo Ngalo (PhD student, ECPS) was selected by the Fulbright program to attend the Educational Justice: Overcoming Barriers to Quality Education in the 21st Century Seminar in Washington, DC, April 2017. This seminar was organized by the Institute of International Education and sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Darlene Garcia Torres (PhD candidate, ECPS) was selected to participate in the Division G pre-conference mentoring event "Scholarship by and for the People: Engaging in Grassroots Change for Democratic Education" in the 2016 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association. This event provided mentoring and professional development opportunities to graduate students who showed a commitment to social justice in education. Graduate students were connected with mentors to discuss issues of scholar-activism, such as negotiating scholar-activism in the academic context, creating community partnerships, publishing scholar-activist research, connecting research to social justice movements, and accurately reflecting community voices and views.

Career

Richard Dirmyer (PhD candidate, ECPS) accepted the position of Director of Institutional Effectiveness at The College at Brockport. He will provide leadership and perform all necessary functions related to the collection, interpretation, and use of institutional data for planning, assessment, and decision making.  Additionally, he will facilitate access to information maintained in the College’s administrative and student information systems to support College operations, ensuring the integrity of data/information released in reports or studies, and provides data analysis, reporting, and research as needed to support institutional objectives.

Nancy Campos (PhD student, ECPS) accepted the position of director of the AC2 program at SUNY New Paltz, which is made up of the Collegiate Science & Technology Entry Program, a grant-funded program sponsored by the New York State Department of Education, and the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, an National Science Foundation funded grant. Both programs aim to increase the recruitment and retention of underrepresented students of color and low-income students in STEM fields, with a focus on graduate and professional school preparation.
