Monitoring Student Success: Running Reports and Using the Blackboard Learn Retention Center

Date: Monday, February 27, 2017

Time: 10:00am to 12:00pm

Location: Baldy Hall, Room 555, North Campus

This webinar will show participants the different Blackboard Course Reports that are available in courses. We will cover each report type and the information that it provides. We will discuss how to read the reports for data on course access and when users have accessed different course content material. Going further into monitoring student progress, we will talk about the Retention Center. The Blackboard Retention Center is used to monitor users using specific criteria including course access, activity, grades, and submissions. Instructors will be encouraged to share their ideas on how they monitor students and how the retention center can be used in these ways.

Quality by Design -- 4 week course

Quality by Design (QbD) is a four-week online course that provides a unique opportunity for faculty and staff to improve courses through a framework for evaluating the effectiveness of seated, online or hybrid courses. Upon completion of this course, participants be able are identify the importance of learner-centered instruction; analyze the qualities of effective course design; and integrate these concepts into their teaching and/or instructional design strategies.

2017 Course Dates:

  • March 13 - April 9 Register is Open
  • June 5 - July 2
  • September 11 - October 8
  • October 16 - November 12

Registration fees will be waived for GSE and all UB faculty and staff for all 2017 course dates.

Tools of Engagement Project (TOEP)

TOEP is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge and your teaching repertoire. It is an online professional learning community with educators sharing ideas about how to engage learners using today’s emerging technologies.

Explore high-quality resources and tutorials to learn about audio, video, gamification, simulation, ePortfolios, online learning, and more through hands-on, self-paced, discovery activities.

The Tools of Engagement Project (TOEP) is just what you need!

New discovery activities and new incentives available for Phase 5!

Phase 5 runs throughout the academic year. Register no later than Feb. 14, 2017. Then complete 5 short (1/2 hour to 1 hour) activities by April 4, 2017. Professional development incentives are awarded through peer-review for sharing innovative ideas about using emerging technology tools in teaching and learning.

GSE Online has partnered with CEI & the School of Social Work in purchasing a virtual pass available to you. You will have access to all streamed sessions for 1 year. To do so, you will need to sign up as an Institutional Member and will then use a code (to be shared only with UB faculty & staff – including GA’s) to get access to the virtual pass. Once you sign up as an Instititional Member please send an email to with the subject line "OLC CODE" and the code will automatically be sent to you.

Joining the Center for Online Teaching Excellence means becoming part of the formal Community of Practice at SUNY. Members of the Community are known as ‘Open SUNY Fellows’ and are asked to share their experience and expertise through roles that ensure they are recognized and supported by the Center, campuses, and their peers.

Am I Eligible for a Course Development Stipend?

In GSE, all programs being moved fully online are vetted through a faculty committee chaired by Christine Kroll and comprised of a faculty member from each department. Current faculty representatives include Michele Shanahan (CSEP), Namsook Kim (ELP), Brenda Battleson (LIS), and Maria Runfola (LAI). All recommendations are reviewed and finalized by Dean Lee. Programs that do gain approval are managed by their program director and only these program courses qualify for a $1500 course development stipend. You will be notified by the program director if you are being asked to design a course for a fully online program.

As you know, in 2013 and 2014, the US News and World Report ranked GSE’s Online Programs in the top 25 of all online Graduate Education programs. In an effort to continue to offer the highest quality learning experiences and to ensure we have documentation for the US News and World Report survey, the following is required prior to issuing a 1500 development stipend.

Faculty will:

  1. Consult with GSE instructional designer to ensure access to course development resources, including the GSE online course template
  2. Complete 4 hours of online education related professional development through GSE/UB/OpenSUNY. If an alternate PD experience was completed within the past 18 months, you may submit the name/dates/offering agency as proof of completion to the GSE Online office to show compliance.
  3. Complete development of your online course at least 28 days prior to the start of the semester to allow the GSE Online office to review your course and offer final suggestions prior to the beginning of the semester. The Open SUNY Course Quality Review rubric is available to program directors who prefer to conduct the review on their own
